General "Inspired By Words" is the theme of the new art exhibit at Lauderhill Art Center. The show opens this week; the opening reception is Saturday April 7, 6-9 pm. Each invited artist was given a 24 x 36 canvas and the challenge of creating a piece of art based on a poem written by a local high school poet. It was truly quite a challenge for me to create art based on my interpretation of another person's vision. What a great artistic experience! It took me way outside my comfort zone and chose to work in a medium that I usually only dabble in. Join us at the opening reception and enjoy the show! General I would like to thank everyone who has responded to my blog regarding helping the victims of the Bastrop,TX fires. It is truly heartwarming to know that so many people are interested in helping in any way they can. Everyone can help just by posting the link to my blog on your facebook page. As a reminder, for the next 2 months I will continue to donate 100% of the profits from the sale of my artwork to my brother Ed whose home was destroyed in the fires in Bastrop. General I have an idea.. My brother's home was totally destoyed last week in the wildfires in Bastrop, Texas. He and his wife are both self employed and have worked hard all their lives. In a matter of hours they lost everything but the few items they could gather before their house was engulfed in flames. More than 1500 families in Bastrop Texas lost their homes in the fires. To help my brother, Ed Gilfus, through this disaster I will donate 100% of the earnings from the sales of my artwork for the next two months to him. Wouldn't you love to buy artwork and at the same time make a donation to a family whose home was destroyed by fire? Please note that if you would like to donate to Ed with out purchasing artwork please contact with Ed directly. If you do not want to purchase artwork but would like to make a general donation to the victims of the Bastrop fires here are some suggestions:   Bastrop officials said the Bastrop Christian Ministerial Alliance working with the Austin Disaster Relief Network is acting as the clearinghouse for people who wish to donate to people in need because of the fire.  Later this week, BCMA will make public a list of appliances and furniture that fire victims need, once they are all allowed back into their properties to assess damage and needs.  Officials ask that monetary donations are given to BCMA, with funds being deposited into First National Bank in Bastrop. These funds are ensured to be given directly to the fire victims in the Bastrop area. To reach BCMA, call 512-332-8977 or 512-332-8661.   You can also still make an online donation on through KXAN's partnership with Walmart and the Salvation Army, called " Neighbors Helping Neighbors." https://secure20.salvationarmy.org/donation.jsp   The Salvation Army warehouse located in Austin will open to give out personal goods, toys and clothing to fire victims starting Friday. It is located at 12317 Technology Blvd., Suite 300. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m on Friday, then change to Monday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Make checks payable to: Salvation Army/ Firestorm TX, PO Box 36607, Dallas, TX 75235. Monetary donations can also be made by phone at 1-800-SAL-ARMY
